Meet My Gaze | Fiona J. Williams | Minimalist Portrait

The description is written by curator Emi Eleode for the exhibition: Humans in their most Vulnerable Form.

The simplicity of this portrait painting has a calming and soothing effect. An older woman caught in the moment– a break from her train of thought. As the saying goes, eyes are the window to the soul. You can know what a person is like in their honest form from the look of their eyes. The eyes cannot lie as well as the mouth when we open it to say things that people want to hear. There’s something innocent and uncomplicated from her expression, The slight tilt of the head suggests someone has tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention. She’s not annoyed by it but welcomes it.

As the title suggests, when we first see this painting, we’re drawn to her vivid and bright sapphire eyes. We can’t look away from them, which is the intention. The sure, quick strokes of the pencil on canvas was done in a way to capture that fleeting moment of being lost in your thoughts before coming back to reality. From the detailing of the woman’s wrinkles to the almost, half-smile, she portrays a worldly image—someone who has seen life’s magic and complexities. And is at peace with the world, completely living in this moment in time. The painting does not need much adornment. It speaks for itself in a clear, effortless and poetic manner.

There’s a knowing look in her gaze. There is quiet confidence which makes us want to sit down with her with a cup of tea while she tells us stories of the meaning of life.

Gallery Notes

Fiona has brought it to our attention that the eyes have a specific detail. The eyes are the only part of the canvas, that has been painted in this portrait like a painting. The eyes have deliberately smudged to the left over the canvas and face. The blue saturated colours of her eyes cannot be met, as it is dryly brushed into her face. Meet my Gaze, is a portrait of confrontation, but if you dare meet her gaze, you realise as Emi has written here above. But confrontation is not inherently negative.
